Football may have not been at its best in the UK this year, but a West Midlands health and fitness business is celebrating after four footballing export successes.
Versaclimber UK, the Stourbridge–based fitness company, has supplied Versapulley strength and conditioning machines to a very famous Italian Serie A side, an Italian Lega Pro 1 side and a South American national football team. Additionally it has sold Versaclimber climbing machines to one of the most famous football teams in Germany – all in the space of a month.
And this is in addition to a number of orders for machines made by Barclays Premier League clubs this year!
The Versaclimber is a climbing and stepping machine that originated in the United States in 1981, and the Versapulley, also hailing from the US, is a strength and conditioning machine used by major football and rugby clubs across the UK. Managing director of Versaclimber UK, Neil Kelford, whose company sells the machines throughout Europe, explains their popularity:
“What generally happens is that people see Versaclimbers and Versapulleys in other gyms and then want them for their own. We also have the advantage that the machines are used by lots of famous people – the Obamas have one or two Versaclimbers we are told!
“Strength and conditioning is essential to football and rugby teams – and those who master it have the physical edge, and the success of the Versapulley is in part due to its adoption by major teams.
“We are a major distributor in Europe, so professional sporting teams, athletes and gyms usually come through us if they specify one.”
Neil established Versaclimber UK Ltd in 1994 as the sole distributor of Versaclimber products in the UK and Europe. Now 15 years later, Versaclimber UK distributes the Versaclimber and Versapulley series of machines with delivery, installation, staff training and maintenance services for all models.
Neil has been working with football clubs since he started the company, but supplying four such big teams at the same time is, he admits, unique.
He adds: “It is unusual to have such a number of big clubs at the same time – but the Verapulley machine seems to be en vogue at the minute in the world of professional football. We are expect a number of repeat orders from some of the clubs soon.”
